As I announced in my last update I'm beginning a new monthly dance party here in New London, CT at The Oasis Pub called Pandemonium. For the Facebook page, CLICK HERE, and hit "like" for updates. It happens every second Thursday of every month beginning on February 9th. Every month will be a new theme and will come with a free mix-cd limited to 50 copies that will be handed out at the door upon entry to the first 50 people. There will also be other freebies to go with the theme of that month. I'm also working on some drink specials too.

So, since the first party is so close to Valentine's Day, which is honestly a bullshit holiday that I hate, the first installment is called Sex Wizard. Why? I think it sounds funny, that's why. The mix-cd will be themed according to theme, and there will be free Sex Wizard condoms to make your drunken bad decisions, or maybe even good decisions, safe for the evening. Happy new year everyone!! Two days in with 2012 and it's already becoming an amazing year. That's saying a lot considering I'm a big negative asshole around this time of the year. What's in store for this year? A lot of shit, and too much to cover in one update, so I'm just updating this as things go along.

My name is now officially ChumZilla, no more Skrilla Guerilla, now if only I could change that on Facebook I'd be happy. I'm hard at work on my production album called "Beats You To Death", and things are going along nicely.

DJ wise, I decided it's been a long time since I've done anything regularly local to New London, CT. I had a quick talk with my good friend Sean Murray over at The Oasis Pub in late November about doing something there on a monthly basis. It took little convincing and no nagging. So with that said: starting February 9, 2012 at The Oasis Pub in New London, I'll be DJing a new dance party every second Thursday of the month. I will have all sorts of free give aways at the door every month and a free monthly mix will be handed out as well. I will also eventually have guest DJ's as things progress. Not sure what else to say about it.

A Little Remix For Everyone...

So I've been remixing and editing a ton of songs lately to used in my DJ sets. I plan on sharing the actual remixes, in other words: songs that I actually make new original music to. All of my edits and blends, I'm hoarding for myself, sorry (but not really).

Here's a remix I did recently of "Shake Your Rump" by Beastie Boys. It's one of my favorite songs off of "Paul's Boutique", and I needed an excuse to play it in my current DJ sets. I gave a moombahton treatment that goes into a dubstep part. So, enjoy it, dance to it, hate it, use it in your DJ sets as a way to go from 110bpm into 70bpm, or just as something to break up a set when you're in the 110bpm range.

Pras Sucks...We All Know This...

I'm pretty sure it's safe to say we all love the second Fugees album "The Score", and it's also pretty safe to say everyone thinks Pras is wack. Let's be honest, do we know any of his verses outside of Fu-Gee-La or How Many Mics? Not so much. Dude sounds like a Haitian vampire, The Count of Hip-Hop.

Here's what I did: I hate Pras as much as I love this album, it's a classic, no question about it. But I thought to myself "I could make this even more of a classic...by removing Pras from every song!!", so I did it, in less than an hour. The continuity of the album is the same, only you can actually listen to the whole thing in one sitting without skipping through a wack Pras verse. I had Open Mic revamp the album cover, and I uploaded to it as a favor to everyone who loves this album. If their first was any good, I would have done that one too, but there's no fixing how shitty that album is. Enjoy it, The Score, all over again.

This Thursday I'll be doing my first official gig on my home turf of New London, CT since June 11th. I did play at the 33 & 1/3 DJ Expo with Prince Paul this past Saturday, but that was more of an exhibition than an actual gig. It's not often I do something local to me, so this is very important, and for a few other reasons.

I'm guesting on my friends DeafDisco (DJ's Deaf Smith & Kid Disco) monthly dance party at The Oasis in New London, CT. You won't be hearing me do a hip-hop set on this night. Here's the flyer, and info:

If you're in or anywhere near the area, I urge you to be there. Like I said, this is important to me for a few reasons, which I'll explain in a few days. My set will also most likely be the next installment of my Agoraphobia series as well.

As I've stated before, somewhere I can't remember exactly, the remix project that was to the companion piece for "Stoop Animals", "Wigger Dance Party" is pretty much scrapped. It was completed then lost on a hard drive that crashed. So unless I can get everything recovered some how, it's gone forever. I am finding some remains though, mostly as rough mixes or incomplete things. Anyway, this is the remix I did for "Violate (Her Mouth)". It's been a while since I've given you guys anything, or did a new mix of anything. I decided to start a new mix series of live DJ sets that I do when I DJ at places. I decided to call it Agoraphobia based on my own experiences with anxiety. Quite honestly, I had a massive mental meltdown at the end of May right in front of a lot of people here in New London, CT. Since then, I've had a terrible fear of losing control again in a public place. Since then, I've been reacting differently to music.

Anyway, here's the first installment. I spun on the DJ night of Beat Shot Fest 3 in Albany, NY at Red Sqaure. I was given 2 different sets that night. One being a hip-hop, which for technical reasons got cut short, and the second being an EDM (electronic dance music) set. This is the second set, it starts with dubstep and moves into more up-tempo stuff. Play it at a party or something.

Guerilla Mix Vol. 1

Since I mentioned in the last blog I'd have some treats on the next update since it's been a long time since I've updated this thing. Well, I actually kept my word here!

Well here it is, Guerilla Mix Vol. 1, a mix I originally did at the end of 2003 during a snow storm. I found a rough version of it in my basement and was reminded on how much I liked this mix. The sad part was that I didn't have a the original files or a copy of the final version anymore. The upside is that I actually took the time and completely revamped the whole mix. This is also the first hip-hop mix I've put up in a really long time.

Not too much else to say about it other than it's available for free download RIGHT HERE in separated tracks, my PODCAST as one long MP3 for stream and/or download, and my MIXCLOUD page for streaming.

Tacas & Burritas (DJ NVS Remix)

It's been a month, I know...it's been a busy one though. I've been hard at work on my production album, working on new tracks for some people, the follow up to "Stoopid Animals" and "Wigger Dance Party" amongst other things.

Speaking of "Wigger Dance Party", I'm not sure I've really talked about it on here or not, so here we go. I decided it might be a good idea to have a bunch of friends remix the entire "Stoopid Animals" EP, including contributions by myself. It's not a collection of remixes though, I'll be presenting it in a similar fashion Diplo did with M.I.A. (Piracy Funds Terrorism) and Santigold (Top Ranking) in a mixtape format including songs that inspired me to make "Stoopid Animals" along with some new "bootleg" songs. It will available for free as a download and probably physical copies at shows. So, there's "Wigger Dance Party" in a nut shell.

So why did I title this entry "Tacas & Burritas (DJ NVS Remix)"? Because I'm offering the first single off "Wigger Dance Party" which is DJ NVS' remix of "Tacas & Burritas". OK, for the past three years I've been doing a weekly radio show with Apathy, Benny Shaik & Blacastan until a few months back. Things just got super busy for everyone, so it was difficult to do the show. Not that anything is slowing down, but we've decided the show is coming back this tuesday at 10pm (est).

I produced a track on it called "Till The Day That We Die". This is an anticipated album, and it's an honor to be a part of it. I was going through files in the studio the other night, trying to clean out the hard drive and came across a gang of remixes I made over the years. Some of them I used in DJ sets but most just sat there and collected dust.

Here's an "obvious" type remix of Mobb Deep's "G.O.D. Pt. III" where I used the waltz from The Godfather. Sort of a no-brainer really. DJ tip for if you play it: it works well going out of "Bloody Money" and works well before "Affirmative Action"...that's how I used to play it.

Everyone went crazy when Jay-Z's "Black Album" acapellas were released, and anyone who could come close to blending a record or making a beat remixed it. I had them a little earlier than some people and decided I'd take a crack at it, but with all the projects I was working on and with the "remix boom", I fell back on it. Also, it's not like I could really use this beat for someone else because after Kill Bill, the sample I used was used to death as well.

Get Busy Committee vs. M.I.A.

OK, at the beginning of this year, my brothers Get Busy Committee released the video to their single "I Don't Care About You", as I posted on here when that happened. About two weeks ago one of my favorite artists outside of my circle, M.I.A. released the video to her latest single "XXXO". Personally, I'm a fan of the song, but her video is damn near identical to Get Busy Committee's!! Don't get me wrong, I love both videos, and M.I.A. looks incredibly sexy in hers.

Sooooo, being that both videos are so much alike, I put them together! I put the Get Busy Committee vocals over the M.I.A. instrumental, and it sounded really good. Then I put the videos together accordingly.

Stoopid Animals Release Party!!

On July 22nd, which is this Thursday, I'm celebrating the release of my "Stoopid Animals" EP at The Oasis Pub in New London, CT. I'm posting the flyer below, so if you're near you can get the location info from there or from their blog.

I will be performing every song off the EP, complete with all of the autotuned ignorance. My dude DJ Teenwolf is coming out from Brooklyn, NY and will hitting the turntables to get your party on. You might remember him from Ninjasonik. Also my dudes Urban P and Gramz.

I pressed up a limited edition (100 copies) of the EP on CD containing a bonus track just for this party. If I have some left over, I'll make them available through my Bandcamp page, my Reverb Nation page or directly at shows. There won't be anymore physical copies available after these 100 unless there's a demand for it, or if I hit the road with it. I'm pretty sure everyone else will have some sort of merchandise for purchase or otherwise available as well.

Sailfest Kick-Off Dance Party With The Swagger Jackers

Tonight in New London, CT at The Oasis my good friends The Swagger Jackers will be doing their last gig in CT for 2010. It's also the kick-off party for New London's Sailfest weekend. That's not it though, it's also the release party for their new mixtape "The Last Starfighter". They will also be debuting remixes for The Fears, Matt Gouette and my own song "Smooth Vagina" off of my Stoopid Animals EP.

Papertapes Weekend & Murderstyle On The Dancefloor...

My good friend Sean Murray has started an artist development firm called Papertapes specializing publicity and radio promotion. The purpose is to promote Connecticut bands outside of the state through blogs, press and radio. He will be hitting the road with my friends Tip The Van on the Warped Tour this summer and will be distributing a sampler of artists working with Papertapes. The sampler will feature The Fears, Gone For Good, MT Bearington, Straight To VHS, Get Haunted, Tip The Van and myself among others.

This weekend, starting tonight, Sean is throwing two shows at The Oasis in New London, CT showcasing the talent he is promoting on the Warped Tour through this sampler. The first show, which is tonight is featuring myself spinning a dance party that I'm dubbing "Murderstyle On The Dancefloor". The second show is tomorrow night featuring Gone For Good and Straight To VHS.

I decided today that I'm starting a series called "The Lost Mixes". I've been finding random mixes of mine all over the place, whether they're just sitting on my computer unfinished or CD's of sets I've done here and there. You never know what you're getting out of this. Hell, I don't even know what I'm getting with these things!!! hahahha

Well, here's the first installment. It's a 45 minute mix of danceable indy stuff I did last summer for what reason, I don't even know. It's probably even incomplete for all I know. I don't even remember making it to be honest, but it was just sitting there on my hard drive in the studio. I called it "Drugs, Guitars, Booze & Stuff"...enjoy.

Award Winning & Stoopid Animals Update...

A few months back it was announced that I was nominated for a Whalie Award in the DJ category, which is New London, CT's version of the Grammy Awards. The show itself was held on May 29, 2010 at the Hygenic Art Park in New London, CT with pretty much the entire local music scene in attendance. Thanks to everyone's votes, I won the Whalie for "Best DJ". The word I got is that I had the best acceptance speech of the night! Here's the video of my speech, courtesy of my dude John Concept.

I planned on releasing my "Stoopid Animals" EP at the beginning of this month, but I decided not to. The reasoning is because I want to give myself more time for promotion and awareness of it. Plus, I added another song to it, and there's elements that still need to be added to it. I'm also shooting a video for "Tacas & Burritas", and I kind of want that to bubble a little. I'll be posting the video for that as soon as it's done. All of the cover is done for it though, and my brother Open Mic did the damn thing!! Tacas & Burritas...

OK, so I "leaked" the song some months ago on here, but I decided I'd do an official release of "Tacas & Burritas" as a proper single, especially for DJ's who might actually play this. Also, if everything goes as planned, I should have my "Stoopid Animals" EP out in about a month. So basically, "Tacas & Burritas" is the official first single off my debut dance/electro/comedy album "Stoopid Animals" available digitally on June 1st.

If I didn't explain it before, "Stoopid Animals" is tongue in cheek side project I started out of boredom while working on remixes. I'm not really trying to rap on these songs, or remotely be serious about it, it's just some fun I was having and thought it might be entertaining to share with everyone. All of the songs are about Taco Bell, sex, drinking, drugs, party, shoes and sex. However, it just so happens to be fully produced like real project. Early Tuesday we got the news of an unfortunate loss in our community. At 5am while leaving the studio with Blacastan, I get a BBM message from Apathy telling me we lost Guru. We fell silent in disbelief and heartbreak. This honestly hit us harder than losing any other musical influence we've had.

The 90's was the time when myself, and the rest of the Demigodz crew, really started to understand hip-hop in itself and what we've been embracing for years. That is the era that would shape us into the artists we are today. One of the groups at the forefront of our influences was Gang Starr. Not only did they influence us heavily, but it's evident through hip-hop as we hear it today that Guru and Premier influence generations of MC's, DJ's and producers.

With the loss of Guru, it marks an unfortunate end to an era I honestly hold closely to my heart. I remember stealing the cassette for "Step In The Arena" from a friend's older cousin. I essentially did the same thing with "Daily Operation". By the time "Hard To Earn" came out, I either bought it was saved up lunch money, or just stole it from the store. Gang Starr played a huge roll in the soundtrack to my life growing up in the 90's. "Moment Of Truth" was given to me as birthday gift, because it came out around the time of my birthday that year. That album was the soundtrack to my summer of me having my first car, and going into my senior year of high school. Not long after high school is when I joined Demigodz. The first time I DJ'd for Apathy, we used the 12" single for "All 4 Tha Cash" and "Full Clip" came out. Not long after Apathy got signed to Atlantic, "The Ownerz" dropped. With all the excitement of us trying to work on that album, "The Ownerz" made us even more excited to make music. Gang Starr just couldn't lose.

With all of that said, I'm sad to know that I won't have a new Gang Starr album to bring me into the next big stage of my life. All we can do is keep that spirit alive through our music and by playing all of those classics that Guru was on from every Gang Starr related record to Jazzmatazz. Gang Starr should have always been a constant staple in any hip-hop DJ's set no matter what age or era they're from. I feel that if you didn't pay attention Guru before his untimely passing, why start now? It is people like myself though that will carry the legacy he started, and as a fellow artist from New England, it would be wrong if I didn't. Unlike some generations, I plan on passing the music that's so close to me onto my children. If they don't listen to it, they will at least have the knowledge of who Guru was and what his music means to their father.

Keith "Guru" Elam, you are already missed, rest is power.

DickChicken Comes To New London, CT!!

Somehow, someway...this happened! haha I walked into my friend Frank Lo's shop, MUSE in New London, CT to find a whole bunch of art from the infamous DickChicken going up on the walls. I've seen the stickers, I've seen the tags and you probably have too. But I haven't seen shit like this! So, what are we doing with all of this off the wall art? We're throwing the last art show at MUSE featuring DickChicken and calling it "It Fucks Your Mouth With Flavor!! Here's what I was told in the press release:

"It Fucks Your Mouth With Flavor" was telepathically concieved by DickChicken and Muse curator AJ Pupillo. To celebrate the closing of Muse they began a 48 hour blitz to throw the show together. Crossing state lines Muse gallery smuggled in the art from it's not to distant cousin NYC. One night only. Featuring new work by Dickchicken, it will be a night of mayhem and debauchery. DJ Rob Vaughn Guess will be spinning. The show will stay up until Muse closes its doors and parties into the sunrise at the El n Gee on April 1st.

New Music From Blacastan!!

If you've ever listened to my radio show, Boombox From The Boondox, or been to any of the live shows within the past 6 months ago, you're hopefully familiar with my friend Blacastan. He's an upcoming star, there's other way to say it. Within the past year he's been making some serious moves appearing on Krum Snatcha's latest album, Esoteric's "Saving Seamus Ryan" album as Benny Macko, and on Apathy's "Wanna Snuggle" album. As a CT artist, I know how rare it is to find another artist who actually puts in the work to break out of the state and make some honest original music without following trends. Blacastan has a big buzz in Boston, but he's from Hartford, CT. Towards the end of 2009 he finalized a deal with Brick to release his debut album "Blac Sabbath" this spring.

Myself and Blacastan are working on a project together. Whether it's a full album or an EP, we're not sure, but we've started recording. The project will be called "Chum the Skrilla Guerilla Produces Blacastan aka Chumastan". The first track we record is called "The Booth", and won't be on the project, so we're making it available for you right here. 3 New Music Videos & A Remix!!

Hot damn! It's been a long time since I've updated this thing, over two months!! I didn't mean for that to happen, but honestly, I've been pretty busy with a lot of things. I have a lot of projects in the works, which will all be announced with some "leaks" either Monday or Tuesday, depends on the amount of time I'm given. So, without further delay, the update!

In August of last year my brother Poison Pen dropped his album "The Money Shot". Honestly, the label dropped the ball, because honestly, labels suck. I produced three songs on the album, one of which is Poison Pen's latest video, "My Dude". I arrived to the video shoot probably about 3 hours after it ended. What can I say? I'm a fucking rock star. Anyway, here's the video, which came out AMAZING!! It was shot on location in Bed Stuy (Brooklyn, NY for those under a rock) and directed by Kevin Lopez. Also last year, in October Apathy, Ryu, and Scoop Deville's new group Get Busy Committee released their debut album "Uzi Does It". I produced the song "Diamonds In Your Eyes" on it. In early January we all headed out to Brooklyn, NY to film the video for "I Don't Care About You" with Matt Lenski. Matt has directed videos for bands like CKY, Zero 7, Mark Ronson, and Regina Spector. But he's probably most known for directing Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin Down" video. It was a lot of fun working with him, and he's a really cool guy. You can see me getting my "E.T." on in the beginning of the video with a roman helmet on. I'm also beating up the beat with everyone on my Jersey Shore shit. I LOVE the way the video came out, they did an amazing job with it.

So many things happened at the of 2009, it was hard to keep this blog up to date. Myself and M!C KiNG (aka iCon The Mic King) dropped our latest album together called "Flavor Ade" under our new group name Cool-Aide. It's more of an album before the album thing, but it's an accurate prelude to what's to come for the official album. I'll report more on that with the next update. In case you missed it though, we managed to shoot out a little Christmas gift for everyone at the end of the year. One of our favorite groups we like to party to is Chromeo. I got my grubby hands on the acapella for their song "Night By Night", did a little remix, and MiC dropped a verse on it. Dave 1 even said it was good! This past tuesday my brothers Apathy, Ryu and Scoop Deville released their group project called Get Busy Committee through Tokyo Sex Whale. The album is called "Uzi Does It", and it's far from what our core Demigodz are used to or were expecting. Right now KROQ in Los Angeles is blowing their single "I Don't Care About You" up!

The album has been released on CD in a smokeable sleeve, and a limited edition version version as a USB flash drive in the form of an uzi with the album on it! Who does this?!?! We do! haha

Then next week, as in a few days, my dude DJ Cheapshot's "Uzi Does It" mixtape is being available! I'll post all the information for that as soon as I have it.

OK, for the past year and change I've been in the studio with Icon the Mic King working on the follow up project for out "Mike & The Fatman" project. We originally intended to make another "underground banger" much darker and angrier than the last. What really ended up happening was the exact opposite, as we were actually having fun in the studio and with music. The resulting project: Cool-Aide.

We have two projects coming out under Cool-Aide within the next year. The first being "Flavor Ade", which serves as more of an introduction with appearances by Slug (of Atmosphere), Elzhi (of Slum Village) and my dude Has-Lo. "Flavor Ade" drops 12/8, so make sure you cop it. I'll do one of my "buyer's guide" blogs that tuesday to help out.

Top 20 Hip-Hop Albums That Changed My Life

OK, I was listening to a lot of older music lately thinking about much music changed my life. These days, that's a very rare thing to come across something musical that's life changing. Since hip-hop has been the most prominant music through out my life, I'm going to share with you the, in no perticular order, 20 hip-hop albums that changed my life with pictures and favorite songs. Sooooo, here we go!

Beastie Boys - "Licensed To Ill" & Run DMC - "Rasing Hell"
I have these two albums tied for this spot because these were the first two hip-hop I was every exposed to. I remember being at my friend's house watching MTV, I was like 5 years old, when the video for Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right" came on. It was seriously the coolest shit ever to me. I mean, I was 5 years old seeing these dudes having a huge party, smoking, chasing girls, being assholes and throwing pies at each other! Immediately following was Run DMC's video for "Tricky" came on. I see these two dudes with super cool hats, DMC's glasses, fur coats in a helicopter talking about how cool they are. That day, I was hooked, my life was changed. As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate these albums even more, and go figure, both albums were produced by Rick Rubin! Come to find out, one of my favorite songs off "Licensed To Ill" was written by Run DMC, crazy!

Beastie Boys - "Slow & Low"

Public Enemy - "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back"
This could be considered typical I guess, but I don't care. The things this album did changed the world with they hip-hop was produced. Honestly, it's not my favorite PE album, that would be "Fear Of A Black Planet", but "It Takes A Nation..." is the one that blew open the doors for that album to be possible. Don't get me wrong, "Yo! Bumrush The Show" is classic, but this is where Chuck really went in and set it off for Public Enemy to be one of the biggest voices ever in hip-hop on the revolutionary tip. Then you had Flavor Flav going crazy. I think I liked Flav more when he was on crack, and not on reality TV. Plus, this album is hard as fuck and I was brought up on bands like Led Zep, Sabbath, and my mom listened to bands like Metallica, Deep Purple etc., so this album was like the hip-hop equivalent to that. Over the years, my favorite song off the album is "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos"...that Isaac Hayes sample...what's fucking with that?

Ice Cube - "Death Certificate"
From the jump, Cube always stood out to me in N.W.A., he was hands down my favorite member. I remember when "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" came out, I was so excited. Then "Kill At Will" was insane with "Jackin' For Beats". But those didn't quite blow me away as much as "Death Certificate" did. He always sounded mad as shit on the N.W.A. records and his first album, but holy shit, this man got heated when he chopped the jheri curl! This album really set the bar for west coast production with other artists following in that sound format like King Tee and Compton's Most Wanted. This album portrayed a sense of social awareness and essentially predicted the LA riot. This was a concept album, with every song being a concept. It really was like an amazingly produced audio book. The only off topic song was the last song, "No Vaseline", and I was floored! He went in so hard on N.W.A.! The production was amazing as well, bringing in Dr. Dre's cousin Sir Jinx. This album really cemented Ice Cube as one of my favorite rappers of all time.

These two albums go hand in hand to me. I can't even describe how much trouble I got in when I got caught listening to "Fuck Tha Police" from my mom! I remember I came home with a dub my friend gave me that he got off his brother playing that in my walkman. I could've believe how much these dudes were cursing! The amount of "n-bombs" being dropped! Then Eazy-E's album doing the same exact thing! I fully attribute these two albums as the reasoning for me being a foul mouthed 40 swilling asshole, namely the "8-Ball Remix" haha. My favorite song off "Eazy-Duz-It" though was MC Ren's insanely annihilated "Ruthless Villian".

A Tribe Called Quest - "Midnight Murauders"
Don't get me wrong, their two albums before this are classics, and I love the rest of the Native Tongues crew, but this album right here is my favorite out of all of them. The main reasoning is that this is when I started to think I wanted to DJ and make beats. This album is a huge inspiration to my production and the cuts. This album is still in super heavy rotation. I don't really know what else to say about it, but it's also the standard to my engineering and how I mix tracks down. Bob Power is such a dope engineer.

A Tribe Called Quest - "Sucka Nigga"

DJ Shadow - "Endtroducing"
When this album came out, I was just strarting to mess with beats and DJing, and this shit blew my mind away! It was ALL samples! The way Shadow chopped the drum breaks, he flipped the shit out of everything on this. This album also changed the world as far as instrumental hip-hop albums went. So dusty and dense, this one of my favorite albums of all time, and it's pure genius. A huge influence on how I chop and program by drums.

DJ Shadow - "Midnight In A Perfect World"

Wu-Tang Clan: "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)"
What can honestly be said about this album and it's influence? Seriously. This is hands down the album that really made be decision for me to do what I do. The grimey sounds, bad mix downs, the speech impedimates, the kung-fu samples, this album is perfect! Wu-Tang really turned the world upside down, and changed mine along with countless of other people's lives. This is the album that sold me on the notion that I need an Ensoniq ASR-10 to make beats.

Gang Starr - "Hard To Earn"
Gang Starr is hands down one of my favorite groups of all time, and DJ Premier is one of my biggest influences all together. Every album of theirs is classic to me, but "Hard To Earn" is the album that put Primo on the map as one of the greatest producers of all time. This album played a huge role in the development of my sound as a producer, and how I've always wanted to produce an album. I love this album so much, I couldn't pick just one song to post! haha

These are two album I put hand in hand together as well. Black Moon set off the whole BCC movement with Evil Dee and Mr. Walt set off the whole dusty jazz thing. Like the production on "Hard To Earn", Da Beatminerz' way of peicing their samples together with crazy drum breaks and dope cuts are huge influence on me. The same thing carried over to "Dah Shinin" only this time going harder with the drums and introducing us to even more of the BCC. Words can't really describe these two albums.

Redman - "Dare Is A Darkside"
The first three Redman albums are his best, and classics. "Dare Is A Darkside" though is my favorite, and his hardest album. He also handled the majority of the production on it, and was really on his shit lyrically. This album stays is heavy rotation 15 years later, and also has my favorite Redman song of all time on it: "I Can't Wait". The production on this album, especially the basslines, is a big influence on my production.

Who's life didn't this album change? Pete Rock is as much an influence on any producer who came up in the 90's as Primo, Large Pro, etc. One song though, "T.R.O.Y." is monumental to me in so many ways. It gets a little mushy, so I won't go into details, but that song and this album has so many of my best memories revolving around it. This album really ushered in the whole horn sample thing and filtered basslines.

Cypress Hill - "Cypress Hill" and Hous Of Pain - "House Of Pain (Fine Malt Lyrics)"
I know I put a few album together in one spot, but they've been equal inspirations to me, these two are no different. Cypress Hill really introduced something new and unique to the game that no one else really did. DJ Muggs is a huge production influence on me, especially with dark and weird sounds. B-Real with the nasal voice and Sen Dog's voice were like polar opposites that worked so well. A Cypress Hill album pretty much played like an amazing pyschodelic rock record, especially this one. It usherd in the whole Soul Assassins sounds that would propell House Of Pain and Funkdoobiest's albums and careers. Quickly following up, Muggs produced House Of Pain's classic freshman album with a rejuvinated Everlast. House Of Pain made it cool to be a grimey white dude without being corny. These two albums stay in rotation, and really influenced me to start making music.

Along with N.W.A., I put full responsibility on Dres for me being the asshole I am now haha. This album is amazingly classic from front to back with rhymes ahead of their time and production as knocking as it was unique. The samples were so weird! I got in trouble for listening to this, a lot! The jokes, the excessive talking about sex, the cursing, it's just amazing. I remember when my cousin bought this album. We were up late listening to it in his room dubbing it for me. He got the album taken away that night because we were playing it too loud.

Even though I honestly play "It Was Written" more, this album blew my mind. You didn't hear Primo do much production outside of Gang Starr at this point, and for the album start off with "NY State Of Mind"...holy shit! The production line up was any MC's dream come true at the time with Primo, Large Pro, Q-Tip and Pete Rock. At that time, the only that would've put it over the edge even more might have production from Da Beatminerz and any producer from DITC at the time. This album is perfect in every way though. What can be said?

Nas - "Represent"

Showbiz & A.G. - "Runaway Slave"
Stripped down bangin beats, hard lyrics. "Runaway Slave" was my introduction to D.I.T.C., and the sparse but bangin beats on here really inspired my sounds. This album is probably one of my earliest influences as to what I wanted to as far as music, and I didn't even know it then. With such a rugged album, they had two of the most classic party anthems on here: "Party Groove" and "Soul Clap".

Along with "Illmatic", this album really put Queens back on the map somthing crazy. Mobb Deep's sound wasn't like anyone else's either. Those drums were so knocking and crisp, I still wish I did drums like that. I can't lie, I used to feel super thugged out rockin this album, and still do a little haha I was just in NY recently, it's getting cold out here on the east coast, and it just felt like the right thing to play in NY in an SUV. This album really showed me how good "space" in the beat is.

When this album came out, I was just starting to get "good" at making beats and really coming up as a DJ. I was also making my rounds and getting my first solid connects musically recording serious material for release. The fact that I saw an indy hip-hop group from Cali's record out here in CT, I had to get it, and it really inspired me to see that it might be possible for me to be heard everywhere. I seriously bought this album strictly off the fact that I've never seen it before, but a little about it on the internet. As soon as I popped that tape into the deck in my '92 Dodge Spirit, I knew I found a gem. "2000 Fold" had a really homegrown feel to me and inspired to me to be like "fuck it, I can produce and record everything myself". It really added to my "independant spirit". Plus, Ryu and Tak were just killin shit! This was also the last cassette to ever be played in any of my cars as my tape deck ate it a week after it wouldn't eject it. Really blows my mind that these guys are like my brothers now and that I work with them.

Styles Of Beyond - "Part II (Endangered)"

Company Flow - "Funcrusher Plus"
All I can say is holy shit, this album, right here REALLY changed my life. I had just gotten my ASR-10 when this came out, and was recording with a Tascam 4-Track cassette jump off, and this album sounded like that to me. It sounded like it was recorded and mixed in someone's basement, this shit was straight gutter. El-P described it best as "dusty but digital". "Funcrusher Plus" is the album that really jump started the late 90's indy hip-hop movement and put Rawkus on the map. Who didn't want to be a Rawkus artist when this came out? These dudes were rapping so off beat to these dusty ass beats, that it was perfect. Everything about this album is still huge inspiration to me, with them making similar music to what I was trying to do. This is THE album that told me "dude, let's do this shit!"

Company Flow - "Vital Nerve"

While Company Flow was killing it from NY, I stumbled across the Rebel Alliance LP. Following in a similar vein soundwise, this caught my ear immediately, especially 7L & Esoteric and Mr. Lif. The shit that really blew me away was that this was coming out of Boston. I felt like I wasn't alone trying to make this sort of hip-hop in New England. The biggest stand out track to me on here was "Be Alert", and it's still one of my favorite songs. When I heard this album, I was like "yo, these dudes are in New England killin it right now! We can do this!" It really put the bug in me to so something and after going to 7L & Esoteric and Mr. Lif shows, I started spending all of my free time on that ASR-10 making beats and starting taking myself more serious as a producer. I never thought that while listing to these guys, I'd end working with them and being in the same crew.

Anyway! I finally banged out the second installment of my "Dance You To Death" mix series. Non of it is really hip-hop, at least not in the traditional sense. It's mostly electro, house, dance, b-more, and anything danceable. I went a little harder on this edition than I did on the first one. So I've been pretty quiet lately and it's mainly on purpose. I've been keeping myself busy with trying to book more DJ gigs for myself. You can only do so many local gigs where I'm at in CT before you lose your mind. So I've really been on my "grind" on getting up away from home. Besides, I want to see some new places!

I created a page on Reverb Nation, where it shows events I have coming up, some songs I worked on, booking contacts, and essentially works at an EPK (Electronic Press Kit).

You can essentially do the same thing with my Facebook page as well. The Reverb Nation page is more effective on the booking end.

Another option is to send an e-mail to BOOK ME directly through my booking agent.

Not the most exciting update, I know, but hey, it is what it is! haha

Apathy: New Album Cover & Release Date

As some of you know already, Apathy announced the name of his next album months ago. A lot of people didn't get, "Wanna Snuggle? Really, Ap?!". However, it all made sense once Open Mic revealed Apathy's new MySpace layout, album cover and release date.

Now THAT'S what I call an album cover! Chris Murray went the fuck in on that art work with the snake! Ap's dad got in on the base coloring and Open Mic handled the rest of course.

Apathy's "Wanna Snuggle" drops October 6, 2009. I have production and cuts on it, of course. All I can really say about the album that Ap really made a SOLID album, and I'm really proud of it. This is album is really big deal to all of us involved, and really brings back the whole "making an ALBUM" concept. Instead of recycling what Ap said said on his blog, I'm closing this out by pasting what he said on his own BLOG.

On the production side of things...

I handle most of beats. Production is my new love. I'm doing a lot of outside production lately (Cypress Hill, AOTP, Tiye Phoenix, Holly Brook, Eternia... the list goes on), so it's only natural that I would pull a Kanye/Pete Rock... and rap over my own shit.

Not to say that there isn't help.
Mike Shinoda did an amazingly classic beat. Teddy Roxpin did 3 beats on my album. And I also had some production collabs with newcomers : Smoke The World and Joey Doughnuts.

And then, there is the incredible musicians like Vertygo, and Ed Briones.... who played bass and keys on a few tracks.

I'm really looking forward to you guys hearing this album. I'm in love with it. I hope you will be, as well.

Blah blah, I don't update, blah blah! haha OK, we all know by now I keep myself busy doing a lot of things, so I'm not gonna talk about it!

I know, I've been neglectful lately...whatever, I'm busy!!! haha I have a new goal though. I want to make fart a trending topic on twitter. OK, so I've been busy working on production for an album that's coming out sometime next year. I'm not announcing exactly what it is until there's more done with it. A WHOOOOLE lot of shit going on

I'm a lazy fat asshole, I do weekly updates. But I have a lot of shit going on this week, like 3 shows in a row, but of course I have my radio show on Monday nights too. First, everyone needs to listen to "Boombox From The Boondox" show I do with Blacastan and Benny Shaik every Monday night from 10pm-Midnight (est). You can listen live at www.whus.org, and if the recorders work, we'll have a podcast to go along with it.

Then there's Wednesday night. I do a weekly hip-hop night with my dude Frank Lo where we play good hip-hop music whether it's old, new, or somewhere in between. If it's dope, we play it. It happens every Wednesday at The Oasis in downtown New London out here in Connecticut. It's also called "Fuck Yo Couch Night", we record it and podcast it sometimes HERE. Here's that flyer.
